5691 in Watertown Yard sports a Tomlinson coupler for subway service. Altho all cars were not MU equipped, the cars on the subway-surface lines all had to have compatible couplers. In case of breakdown they could be coupled up and pushed or pulled to a siding to clear the line for service. Some stations had dead-end sidings to accomodate breakdown cars,such as Park St.
