517 on the E line in 1946.
Historically, there were two E lines. The first existed from 1920 to 1932, and was the interurban line from Eagle Rock to Hawthorne. This later became the 5 line.
The letter E was reused in 1939 to identify the the O linen which this picture was taken.
It was a workaday line in the manner of a shuttle, which connected the east ends of the R, F, P and B lines to the Boyle Heights area.
This E line was abandoned in 1946, the year this photo was taken. Boyle Heights was famous as the home of Ignacio MonDragon, a renowned violin dealer now of San Francisco.
