PandW's section of the terminal was "temporary," comprised of corrugated metal buildings added to the north side of the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Co.'s elaborate terminal for the Market Street Elevated. According to traction historian Ronald DeGraw, the PandW section had no waiting room since it was anticipated the temporary buildings would soon be replaced. They were -- but not for 55 years.
This was a multi-level yard. There was one unloading track on the upper level and two boarding tracks -- one on the upper level and another at a slightly lower elevation. The side track in the lower right hand side of the photo is the Pennsylvania Railroad's Cardington Branch, which made a connection with PandW for freight service and to make deliveries to PRT and later Philadelphia Transportation Co. elevated train shops.
