Honest to God, this really happened.

The SP installed an 89-91 degree diamond backwards and the track gang came along laying the track to "blueprint" and the rails didn't line up. Just like the Polish Gold Spike ceremony in the famous cartoon.

This was at the Slauson Junction crossing of the SP and ATSF on August 28 1987. The old SP line to the left was ripped out and the trolleys now ramp up to a flyover, over the Santa Fe, parallel to the SP which of course stays down on the ground.

View looks north along the SP alignment.
