The Milwaukee Road (CMSTP&P) Electrics
Updated March 8 2015

The Milwaukee Road electrified its main line in order to solve the problem of operating steam equipment in mountainous terrain. Initally, the Rocky Mountain Division was electrified across the Bitterroot Mountains between Harlowton MT and Avery ID coming into service in 1917. The Coast Division crossing the Cascades was electrified in 1919 between Othello WA and Tacoma WA, and the electrification was subsequently extended to Seattle in 1926.

In 1971, the Coast Division was de-electrified, and the Rocky Mountain Division followed in June 1974.
