Connecticut
Shore Line Electric Railway
Shore Line Electric was
an interurban project that tried to operate an interurban line, in competition
with the New Haven Railroad, to link New Haven and eastern Connecticut.
Its operating life was short, opening for business in September 1910 and
ending operations July 31 1919. A disastrous head-on collision in
August 1917 added to the money-losing line's woes, and an employees' strike
in July 1919 was the final straw. Carbarns were located at Guilford
and Saybrook. In early 1923 the company, reorganized as the New Haven
& Shore Line Railway, resumed trolley service on the New Haven - Guilford
(via North Branford) line, and operated bus service Guilford - Saybrook
- New London and Saybrook - Middletown. NH&SL trolleys operated
until late 1929 and were then replaced by buses. The rest of the
SLER system was torn up in 1924.
