Coral Gables
Car 4 (St. Louis Car Co.
December 1925) sits idle in Coral Gables after a hurricane on November
4, 1935 wiped out the two lines that remained on the system. The line operated
two lines from downtown Miami to Coral Gables and two others to points
south and west
of Coral Gables. After
the hurricane this car, and its nine brethren, was offered up for sale,
but there were no takers. Starke Electric in Ohio was reportedly
interested, but purchased Cincinnati lightweights from other properties
instead, as these cars were badly rusted out. The car as pictured
was painted blue, but had originally been delivered in a coral pink color.
One body survived into the 1960s as a shed near Belle Glade, FL.
The remaining double truck Birney cars were sold and soldiered on over
the Miami Beach Electric until their abandonment in November 1940.
