Pensacola Electric Terminal
Railway
#50 in a Brill builders
photo. The Pensacola Electric Terminal Railway Company bought the
old Pensacola Terminal Company in 1897 when the latter ran into financial
difficulty. In November, 1897, the line converted the mule-draw service
to an electric trolley system. The old street railway was rebuilt
to accommodate electric trolleys and commenced operations on March 21,
1898. Five years later the line had 18 miles of track and fourteen
vehicles, two of them winterized for year round comfort. In 1902
the City Council approved double tracking of the downtown routes.
The line to Fort Barrancas continued steam-powered operations. In
1906, Stone and Webster of Boston, Massachusetts, purchased the utility
rights in the City of Pensacola. Stone and Webster established a
new company, the Pensacola Electric Company, to operate all utilities,
including the transit system.
