Qunicy
Bay State Street Railway
Bay State and Boston &
Northern merged to become the Eastern Mass. The line had an extensive
freight business which began in 1906 and lasted until 6/16/20, and served
(at its peak) some 38 towns in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The
W. L. Douglas Shoe Co. was one of the best customers and was served by
a spur off of Spark Street in Brockton.
There were a maximum of
39 freight motors and 5 trailers. Car 22 was one of a group of 5
(21 - 25), a 30' box motor built by Laconia in 1913, with Baldwin type
A trucks, 4 GE 201 motors, MK controls, 45,800# and a 20 ton capacity.
With the close of freight service, the trailers were sold to Connecticut,
and the motors were made into sweepers and plows, with the bulk retired
by the late 30's, but at least one surviving until 1948.
