Allentown
Allentown & Reading
Street Railway.
A suburban car built by
Brill (semi-convertible) in 1902 with 27-E trucks for interurban type service.
The young man standing on the steps is my late mother's brother, the late
Paul Fox of Reading Pa. The picture was taken in front of the Allentown
Reading Traction Car barn located on Willow Street in Kutztown, Pa.
Kutztown is located midway
between Allentown and Reading Pa., a total distance of about 36 miles on
Route 222 in eastern Pennsylvania. Kutztown was the maintenance headquarters
for the ART. The ART was dual gauge. From Allentown To Kutztown the gauge
was standard 4'81/2" and from Kutztown to Reading the gauge was wide gauge
5'. Car # 33 was a wide gauge trolley, and only operated from Kutztown
to Reading. The reason the Reading side of the ART was wide gauge
is that the city gauge in Reading was wide gauge and this allowed the ART
to operate in the City of Reading.
