500 is a former Spokane, Coeur d'Alene and Palouse, photographed northbound on Robbins Street in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. The photograph is probably circa 1947-1949. The cars behind the motor are ice reefers, probably loaded with prunes from the Blue Mountain Prune Growers Cooperative.
The photo was probably taken during September, as the prune rush is underway and leaves on the trees are just starting to lose their deep green color.
The Walla Walla Valley acquired 500 from Dulien Steel Products, which had acquired several SCandP motors after the SCandP was converted to steam operation in 1940-42.
The WWV paid $4,000 for this locomotive. and its tonnage was good for 7 cars of prunes on the grade north to Walla Walla. The WWV dieselized in early 1950 with surplus HH660 Alco switchers from owner Northern Pacific. The railroad abandoned in 1985.
