Air-Electric PCC 1630 posing at Bunkerhill Car House where the car was operated on the 71, 73, 82 and 96 lines. The car was built and delivered with an extended roof monitor with ceiling fans and windows that open with cranks, it was otherwise identical to the rest of the 1601-fleet but also a model for the 1700-series cars, all of which were delivered with fans and sealed windows. When Highland and Plummer Car Houses closed mid-1950s car 1630 went to South Hills. In the early 1960s, 1630 was shopped for overhaul and had the roof monitor and fans removed. The monitor was replaced with a bubble cowl like that of the 1000-1199-series for which PAT allegedly rejected the car. 1630 was scrapped in 1967 Of note: The first 30-1601s were delivered with modified field-shunting. While this allows for modestly higher balance speed it also allows for higher speed upgrade, of significance in the hills of Pittsburgh.
