1740 on what is actually the *Dinky Track* which connected Mt. Lebanon with Castle Shannon on August 14 1970. In early PRCo days, this was worked by a double ended PN Jones low floor car from the end of the 38 Mt Lebanon to the interurban lines in Castle Shannon. It was single track with one long passing siding. In latter PRCo days and after the P.N. Jones cars were gone, certain rush hour trips of the 38-MT LEBANON continued on to Castle Shannon. This practice was continued after PRCo through routed the 42 DORMONT line with the 38 to create the 42/38. The part of the 38 along W. Liberty Avenue from Dormont Junction to Dawn was discontinued. 1740 is actually heading outbound into the wye at the end of the large loop in Castle Shannon. This is a former car yard for interurban cars and after the equipment was moved to South Hills Car House in the 30s, the large loop was used as a training loop. Today this is a part of the light rail line from South Hills Village through Washington Junction to Castle Shannon along the former Dinky track, now double tracked. At Mt. Lebanon near the old Clearview loop, the line tunnels underground to emerge just inbound of the former 42 wye. The LRV route continues the old 42 line inbound through Dormont and Beechview to South Hills Junction. The ancient trolley tunnel is now paved for buses and emerges to cross the Monongahela River on the old PRR right of way and then enters the downtown subway.
