Rapid 109, built by St Louis Car in 1954, in March 1955 at the Windermere Yard, the destination sign indicates the never constructed Public Square via Subway Loop route. Public Square via Subway Loop was part of the DeLeuw Cather plan for CTS and originated in the Reed McCarter Plan of 1943 (for streetcar rapid transit based on Shaker Rapid technology). A bond issue authorization for $35 million was approved by the electorate of Cuyahoga County subject to approval by the County Commissioners. County Engineer Albert S. Porter (Dem., an elected job) lobbied strenuously against it, and convinced two of the three commissioners to not approve issuing the bonds. Porter was first and foremost a highway advocate and opposed CTS rapid transit efforts at every opportunity. The subway was never built and the sign was never used. This car was converted by RTA to a garbage car in 1990.
