Mattoon
Central Illinois Traction
Co.
Central Illinois Traction
Co. was the 12 mile interurban built between Mattoon and Charleston and
opened June 15, 1904. #205 is at the carbarn in Mattoon. The
Mattoon Street Railway Company and the Central Illinois Traction Company
were two separate companies (but used the same carbarn). The Central
Illinois Public Service Company was formed out of the Mattoon Street Railway
Company in the early 1910 era, after which it purchased both companies,
the Southern Illinois Railway & Power, and many other companies (including
several other smaller streetcar sytems in the area) to form a power generating
and power system in central and southern Illinois which still exists today.
