Rock Island
Rock Island Southern
One of the 8 cars sold to
the Rock Island Southern by the Washington Baltimore & Annapolis Electric
Railroad in 1910. The cars were built by Niles in 1907 as 6600VAC
cars. They were 62'-3" long, seated 66, and weighed 109,000 # as
built. They were part of a group of 19 coaches, all of which had
Baldwin 90-40MCB trucks and 4 GE 603 motors. One car was wrecked
in 1908, and when the WB&A converted to 1200 VDC in 1910, the cars
were sold, with 8 of them going to the Rock Island Southern, becoming #300-305
and #425-426. The long lingering death of the RIS is documented in
CERA's "Smaller Electric Lines of Illinois", and in Hilton & Due.
