Paul Ward's Collection
The newspaper clipping taped
to the back of this photo reads as follows: "TWO CENTS A RIDE,
two rides a day, five days a week, 50 weeks a year, amounts to some $10
a year. Which is why the lady at the left enters a Market street
car in solitary splendor while citizens stay away from the inside tracks
by the hundreds, ride instead on the 5-cent municipal line. Market
Line officials, anticipating a juicy increase in revenue from the 7-cent
fare, find instead that the way San Franciscans take to the idea is gosh-darned
seldom."
