The newspaper clipping taped to the back of this photo reads as follows:  "TWO CENTS A RIDE, two rides a day, five days a week, 50 weeks a year, amounts to some $10 a year.  Which is why the lady at the left enters a Market street car in solitary splendor while citizens stay away from the inside tracks by the hundreds, ride instead on the 5-cent municipal line.  Market Line officials, anticipating a juicy increase in revenue from the 7-cent fare, find instead that the way San Franciscans take to the idea is gosh-darned seldom."
