Ex-Chicago Surface Lines X-4 has an interesting history. Built in 1902 as a dump motor and numbered as Chicago Railways 2 (later CSL N-2). In 1946, it was completely rebuilt by CSL as a self-propelled rail derrick and renumbered X-4.
In 1958, after streetcar service had ended, it was transferred to the CTA Rapid Transit division and renumbered S-344. Unfortunately, it was not well suited to rapid transit service and was retired by 1963.
The Electric Railway Historical Society acquired X-4, transferring it to the Illinois Railway Museum in 1973, and is seen here on March 13 2004
